Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 29, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what TAQWASTEPS collects, why, where it is kept, who can see it, and how you can delete it, when you use the TAQWASTEPS app for Android, the TAQWASTEPS web app and this website.
In short: we do not sell your data. TAQWASTEPS has no advertising networks, no analytics or tracking tools and no crash-reporting tools. Much of what you do in the app stays on your phone and never reaches us.
1. Who We Are
TAQWASTEPS is looked after by two admins: one for sisters and one for brothers (see section 9).
2. Information We Collect
These are saved to your TAQWASTEPS account on our servers:
- Account — Your name, email address, password and date of birth. Your password is kept by our login service in a scrambled form that we cannot read. If you sign in with Google, see section 6.
- Brother or Sister — asked once after you create your account. It keeps the scoreboard and pictures separate (section 5) and decides which admin looks after your account.
- Mobile number (optional) — for emergency contact only. We send no SMS and do not check it.
- Profile picture (optional) — you can choose "No picture" at any time.
- Your Salah log — which prayers you marked, on which day, and how (in jamaat, alone, qaza), so the app and the web app show the same history.
- Scoreboard line — your name as on your account, the country of your prayer-times location, and your Salah, Tahajjud and Quran scores (section 5), your friend code, friends and friend requests.
- Premium — which redeem code you used and until when your Premium lasts.
- Opened the app today — one mark for each day you open the app or web app while signed in, and the date you were last active. The admins see these only as counts (how many people were active), and on your account only the last date.
- Promotions and community notices you submit (section 7).
- Reports you make of a name, a picture or an item (section 8).
- Web app reminders — if you enter your masjid's times in the web app, they are saved with your reminder choices and the address your browser gives us for sending you notifications.
These reach us only when you send them:
- Messages — bug reports, feedback, emails and WhatsApp messages. A bug report sent from the app goes through your own email app, so we see your email address, your message, the app version, your Android version and your phone model.
- Waitlist — your email address, if you join the waitlist on this website.
Payments. TAQWASTEPS takes no payments in the app. Premium is given with redeem codes. A business whose promotion is approved pays outside the app (UPI or bank transfer); we keep only whether it has been paid. We never receive or store card details.
3. What Stays on Your Phone
These stay on your phone (or in your browser, in the web app) and are never sent to us:
- Your moods after prayers
- Dhikr counts, morning and evening adhkar, and daily routines and checklists
- Quran progress, bookmarks and the daily page count
- Your Tahajjud log and your Tahajjud reflections
- The photos of your sink for the Tahajjud alarm (section 11)
- The reason you give when you pause your scores
- The fasting tracker
- The masjid times you enter in the Android app
- Your exact location (only your country is used for the region scoreboard, section 5)
- Which app is on screen, used by Salah protection (section 11)
- The people you hide on your own boards (section 8)
- Your settings
If Android backup is switched on in your phone's settings, Android may keep a copy of some of this in the backup in your own Google account. Your login, downloaded recitations and the alarm's state are left out of that backup, and sink photos are kept where Android never backs them up. We have no access to your backup.
4. How We Use Your Information
- To sign you in and keep your account
- To keep your Salah history from the right day (using your date of birth, section 12) and your scores
- To show you on the scoreboards of your own gender, until you delete your account (section 5)
- To show approved promotions and community notices to the audience they were made for (section 7)
- To review reports and keep TAQWASTEPS safe (sections 8 and 9)
- To know how many people use TAQWASTEPS each day, as counts only
- To answer your messages, fix problems you report and send the emails you need (for example a password reset)
- To tell you about the launch, if you joined the waitlist
Prayer times, the Qibla, reminders and alarms are worked out on your phone and need no server.
5. The Scoreboard
When you create an account you agree to appear on the TAQWASTEPS scoreboard, for brothers only or for sisters only. Everyone who has chosen Brother or Sister is on it, whatever their scores (a score of 0 is shown too), until they delete their account. There is no separate way to leave it.
- Who sees you. Only people of your own gender: brothers see only brothers, and sisters only sisters, on every board and in friends and friend requests. Our database enforces this, not just the app.
- What they see. Your name as it is on your account, your country, your Salah, Tahajjud and Quran scores and, if you have one, your picture. Never your email address, mobile number, date of birth, prayer log or anything you write.
- Where you appear. Your friends board, your region board (people in the same country) and the world board.
- Your region comes from the country of the location you use for prayer times (or, until that is known, your phone's SIM card). Your exact location is never sent.
- Friends. You get a code, such as TAQWA7K3M, to give to the people you choose. Someone becomes your friend only when one of you sends a request with the other's code and the other accepts it.
- A private reference. Each line on a board carries a reference made from your account by a secret kept only on our server, so that a name can be reported or a person hidden without your account's identifier being handed out.
6. Signing In with Google
If you choose "Continue with Google", Google gives us your name, email address and profile photo. We receive no Google password.
If you have no profile picture yet and have not chosen "No picture", your Google photo becomes your TAQWASTEPS picture, once: it is copied, made small (256 × 256 pixels) and stored with our picture service (Cloudinary), not linked from Google. The app tells you when this happens. Like any picture, it is seen only by people of your own gender, and you can change or remove it in Profile at any time.
7. Community Help and Promotions
In the app you can share a business promotion, or ask for help: a missing person, medical help or a donation appeal.
- What is stored. The kind of item, its title and words, a picture if you add one (with Cloudinary), its button and link, its dates, its audience (everyone, brothers or sisters) and, for a promotion, the business name.
- Reviewed first. Nothing is shown until the admins have reviewed and approved it; items involving money need both admins.
- Who sees it. The audience you chose, between its dates. Your name, email address and mobile number are not shown with it.
- Proof is private. Proof for medical help and donation appeals (such as a hospital letter) is stored privately and seen only by the admins, never in the app.
- Missing persons. You confirm that you are family or have the family's permission. The family contact number you give is shown with the notice so people can reach the family.
- Views and taps are counted at most once per person per day. You see only the numbers, never who they were.
- Removing it. You can pause or delete your own items at any time; deleting your account deletes them.
TAQWASTEPS shares community notices to help. We check them, but cannot guarantee them: please verify before donating. The app never collects money for anyone.
8. Reporting and Hiding
- Reporting a picture or a name on the scoreboard stores who reported whom, the picture or the name as it was shown, and when. It goes only to the admin of that person's side. The person is not told who reported them.
- Reporting a promotion or community notice stores the item, who reported it, the reason (misleading, offensive, a scam, something else) and when. It goes to the admin of that side, or to both admins for items involving money.
- Each person can report each picture, name or item once, and at most 20 times a day.
- Hiding a person on your own boards is kept only on your phone. Nothing is sent, and they are not told.
- Reports are deleted with the account of the person who made them.
9. The Admins
TAQWASTEPS has exactly two admins: the Founder, a brother, who looks after brothers, and the Co-founder, a sister, who looks after sisters. Each side stays with the admin of that gender. A person who has not yet chosen Brother or Sister is looked after by both. The admins use a private admin panel, inside their own apps, and must sign in with a password and a 6-digit code from an authenticator app.
What an admin can see about a person on their own side: name, email address, Brother or Sister, the date they joined, the date they were last active and last signed in, their region, their Premium end date, their scoreboard scores, their picture, their mobile number, their submitted items and the reports about them. An admin never sees the other side's pictures or mobile numbers. Admins do not see your Salah log, your date of birth or anything kept on your phone.
What an admin can do: disable or enable an account, change a name or mobile number, delete an account, handle requests to change Brother or Sister, review, approve, pause or reject promotions and community notices, remove a picture, handle reports, give Premium codes, and send announcements and maintenance notices that everyone sees in the app.
Every admin action is written to an activity log that both admins can read.
10. Location
- The Android app uses your approximate location only, to work out prayer times and the Qibla on your phone. If you choose "Use my location", it checks again each time you open the app, so your times follow you to another city; never in the background. If you choose a city by hand, your location is not checked.
- Your location stays on your phone. Only your country leaves it, for the region scoreboard.
- To show your city's name, or find a city you type, the app asks your phone's location service (on most Android phones this is provided by Google).
- The web app sends your position to the Aladhan prayer times service and to OpenStreetMap, to get prayer times and your city's name.
You can refuse location and choose your city by name instead.
11. Permissions on Your Phone
The Android app explains each of these before Android asks, and you can say "Not now":
- Notifications and exact alarms — for the Adhan, Iqamah and Dhikr reminders and the Tahajjud alarm, at the exact minute. Every hour from Isha until Fajr, the app can also remind you what is still left that day before a score goes back to 0; you can switch this off.
- Full-screen alarm and display over other apps — to show the Tahajjud alarm, and the Salah screen of Salah protection, over other apps and the lock screen.
- Usage access (Salah protection, Premium) — to see which app is on screen, only during prayer windows, so the Salah screen can pause social media and games. With the list of apps on your phone, it recognises which ones are games. This never leaves your phone; we keep no record of the apps you use.
- Camera (only if you choose the sink task for the Tahajjud alarm) — the live camera only, never your gallery. The one to three photos of your sink you take at setup stay on your phone, in storage Android never backs up. The photo taken when the alarm rings is compared with them on your phone, without the internet, and is not kept. No photo is ever sent to us.
- No battery restriction — so Fajr and Tahajjud alarms are not stopped by battery saving.
- Modify system settings — only if you choose to make a TAQWASTEPS sound your ringtone.
You can withdraw any permission in your phone's settings at any time.
12. Children and Teens
TAQWASTEPS is for people aged 13 and over. The app does not accept a date of birth that shows a younger age. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it and its data.
We use your date of birth for your age and for your Salah history: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Command your children to pray when they become seven years old" (Sunan Abi Dawud 495), so your history counts from the day you turned seven. This does not mean children of seven may hold an account. Your date of birth is never shown to anyone.
13. Service Providers
We do not sell or trade your personal data. These services are needed to run TAQWASTEPS and receive only what is described. Data may be processed outside your country.
- Supabase — our login service, database and server functions, where the account data in section 2 is stored.
- Cloudinary — stores and delivers profile pictures, promotion pictures, wallpapers and sounds, and keeps proof files private for the admins.
- Resend — sends our emails (such as password resets), so it receives your email address and the email. We record only whether each email was delivered, bounced, failed or marked as spam, with the address, subject and reason; never the content.
- Google — sign-in with Google, and city names through your phone's location service.
- everyayah.com — the Quran recitation, when you play or download it. It receives only the audio file request: your internet (IP) address and the file asked for, as with any web request. Nothing else is sent to it. Downloaded recitations stay on your phone in the app's private storage and are not backed up.
- Aladhan and OpenStreetMap — prayer times and city names in the web app.
- Formspree — receives the waitlist and feedback forms on this website.
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr — deliver fonts and code the website and web app need.
We may also share information when the law requires it.
14. Keeping and Deleting Your Data
We keep your account data for as long as you have an account. You can delete your account at any time, in the Android app (Settings → Delete Account), in the web app (Profile → Delete Account), or by email. Every way is described on our Delete Your Account page.
- In the Android app everything is deleted at once: your login, profile, Salah log, masjid times, notification subscription, scoreboard entry, code, friends and friend requests, Premium record, submitted items, the reports you made, your picture (from Cloudinary too), and everything TAQWASTEPS keeps for you on that phone.
- In the web app your profile and the data in that browser are removed at once; everything else within 5–7 working days.
- By email: write to taqwasteps@gmail.com from the email address of your account; we reply within 4–7 working days and delete the account within 5–7 working days.
If an admin deletes an account (for example, for breaking our Terms), we keep only that account's random identifier, with no name, email or other detail, so the app on that person's phone can tell them their account was deleted and how to contact us.
The admins' activity log keeps which admin did what and when. Waitlist email addresses are kept until the launch, or until you ask us to remove yours.
15. Security
- Everything travels between your device and our servers over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Our database uses row level security: you can read and change only your own data, and everything else goes through checked server functions.
- The admins must pass two-step verification (a 6-digit code) to use the admin panel, and their actions are logged and limited.
- Your login is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. No secret keys are kept in the app or on the website.
No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data.
16. Your Rights
You can ask to see, correct or receive a copy of your personal data, delete your account, withdraw any permission you gave the app, and opt out of emails. Contact us at the address in section 1. You can change your name, mobile number and picture yourself in Profile; Brother or Sister can be changed only by asking us.
17. Grievances
If you have a complaint about how we handle your data, contact our Grievance Officer: M D UMMER FAROOQH, taqwasteps@gmail.com. We will acknowledge your complaint and reply within 4–7 working days.
18. Changes to This Policy
If we change this Privacy Policy, we will post the new version on this page and change the date at the top. If a change affects what we collect or who can see it, we will also tell you in the app (an announcement on Home) before it takes effect.
